The production and provision of knowledge resources and services and its promotion including networking is one of the main roles of the Poverty-Environment Initiative.
Knowledge Resources
The regional and country teams of the Poverty-Environment Initiative (PEI) in close cooperation with governments, research institutions, international experts and other stakeholders generate country-specific original assessments, studies, methodologies, reports, policy briefs, guidelines, communication materials and more to inform and facilitate the poverty-environment mainstreaming process.
Based on the PEI experiences at country level, the Poverty-Environment Facility (PEF) develops and collects knowledge materials including reviews, methodologies, tools, and examples from countries. It documents lessons learned and good-practices. Generic PEI guidance materials are available in form of Handbooks, Primers, Fact Sheets, Guidance Notes and country success stories. These knowledge materials are provided in return to support those engaged in country-level environmental mainstreaming.
This process is carried out in partnership with UNDP and UNEP thematic/technical units, and with external partners including members of the Poverty-Environment Partnership (PEP).
Our generic elibrary offers selected external and PEI knowledge resources to inform each of the steps of the poverty-environment mainstreaming process. Based on experience to date, successful environmental mainstreaming requires a programmatic approach— adapted to national circumstances. The materials are organized according to the components and activities of the PEI programmatic three-phase approach.

Preparatory Phase: Finding the entry points and making the case
Phase 1: Integrating environment
into national development processes
The Poverty-Environment Initiative has established a global community of practice which includes over 230 practitioners from the PEI countries, UNDP country offices, UNEP and the PEI. A global e-network provides a platform for exchange, facilitates the synthesis and dissemination of lessons from country experiences, and expands access to knowledge resources on poverty-environment and environmental mainstreaming issues. PEI Practitioners can submit queries for information, advice or exchange of experiences on any subject relevant to mainstreaming. The Poverty-Environment Facility keeps the community of practice regularly informed of the programme development across regions, new knowledge products and website updates through an internal newsletter.
In the regions where the Poverty-Environment Initiative works, the regional teams help to develop regional communities of practice on poverty-environmental mainstreaming in the context of supporting national development strategies. The regional communities of practice have an operational orientation, with a focus on South-South dialogue and experience exchange, and provide a means for supporting the documentation and sharing of lessons, good practices and case studies. This includes dissemination of policy research, practical experiences and other knowledge resources. The regional communities of practices operate mainly through workshops and face-to-face meetings.
PEI country knowledge resources and information
Information and knowledge resources related to the PEI country programmes are available through individual PEI country webpages. The country websites feature information about core programme data, introduce the country-specific poverty-environment mainstreaming context, highlight major programme achievements and challenges, describe the way forward and feature key PEI country documents.
Our country-specific PEI elibrary offers quick access to original country-specific PEI publications, encompassing assessments, studies, reports, guidelines, policy and issue briefs. The materials are organized according to the components and activities of the PEI programmatic three-phase approach.
