United Nations Poverty-Environment Initiative

Workshop on Environmental Economics for Policy Makers, Bangkok, Thailand, 10-13 December 2007

The four-day workshop will bring together some 25 policy makers from Finance, Planning, Agriculture, Environment, Energy and other sector ministries from all the countries in South Asia. The objective of the workshop is to expose policy makers to the broad linkages between environmental change, poverty, and economic development.

The workshop will address questions such as will environmental regulations stem economic development and growth? What are some economic tools that can be used to reduce pollution? Will environmental management contribute to poverty reduction?  How does climate change matter for South Asian countries and so on.  Workshop faculty will include colleagues from UNDP, UNEP and The South Asian Network for Development and Environmental Economics (SANDEE) as well as researchers and university professors.

The course is jointly organized by UNDP (Colombo and Bangkok), UNEP, Thailand and The South Asian Network for Development and Environmental Economics (SANDEE) as part of an effort to integrate environment into development planning and thinking. SANDEE is a research and capacity building organization that works with economists and policy makers around South Asia.
