United Nations Poverty-Environment Initiative

UNDP-UNEP Poverty-Environment Facility Partners with the IIED to create User Guide to Effective Tools for Environmental Mainstreaming.

Effectively mainstreaming environment into development planning and policies presents a great challenge.  In an effort to assist practitioners in mainstreaming environment, the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) launched the “User Guide Project” to evaluate the effectiveness of tools and tactics for mainstreaming environment into development planning. The Poverty-Environment Facility is working with IIED to develop case studies for the User Guide Project.

The User Guide will be based on results from case studies undertaken in 20 countries. The PEF in Nairobi, with the support of PEI-Kenya, is carrying out the Kenya country case study for the User Guide. PEF team members have interviewed over 20 professionals, recording their perspectives on the most and least useful tools for mainstreaming environment into development planning. PEF will also embark on developing case studies in two other countries in East Africa in early 2008.

The focus of the Guide will be on tools and tactics (both formal and informal) which directly help to shape plans, policies, and decisions. In a later phase, IIED will bring the information from the case studies together in a User Guide featuring the most effective tools for environmental mainstreaming.
