In order to coordinate and support the expansion of the PEI, UNDP and UNEP established in May 2007 a joint global Facility based in Nairobi.
The Facility includes staff members from both UNDP and UNEP who carry out the following functions:
Donor Relations and Resource Mobilisation
- Establish and maintain relations with key multilateral and bilateral donors to build support for and engagement with the Poverty-Environment Initiative
- Raise funds at the global level for PEI country programmes and regional and global support functions
- Ensure overall monitoring and evaluation as well as regular donor reporting
Technical Support
- Provide on demand technical support to PEI regional and national teams in the field of poverty-environment mainstreaming, from programme preparation to implementation
- Develop practical tools for mainstreaming with a view to foster learning and develop economies of scale across regions and countries
- Develop technical and policy guidance for poverty-environment mainstreaming based on experience gained at country level
Planning and Strategic Partnerships
- Provide strategic advice for the preparation and implementation of PEI regional strategies
- Identify and establish agreements with selected partner institutions to contribute to the technical support and knowledge management functions of the Facility
- Engage and collaborate with the development community in the field of poverty and environment (e.g. Poverty Environment Partnership, OECD Development Advisory Committee)
- Ensure alignment with UNDP and UNEP’s strategic priorities and relevant programmes and initiatives.
Knowledge Management
- Gather, collate, develop and disseminate knowledge on poverty-environment mainstreaming methodologies, tools and good practices, including a PEI publication series
- Establish and facilitate information and knowledge-sharing across PEI countries and regions
- Facilitate and manage a Community of Practitioners including client governments
