New report on economic instruments for environmental conservation in Tanzania
The Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs/Tanzania and UNDP with funding from the Poverty-Environment Initiative released a new report on "Use of Economic Instruments to Promote Environmental Conservation in the United Republic of Tanzania".  The report reviews and assesses the current use of economic and financial instruments for environmental policy in Tanzania; sectors examined include waste management, water, energy, transport, wildlife and biodiversity protection, agriculture, forestry, fisheries, mining and manufacturing.  The report concludes that there would be numerous areas benefiting from further implementing environmental fiscal measures. Proposed actions include new legislation for product taxes and CO2 tax; a new Environmental Fund and green public procurement; introducing greening budgeting processes and cost covering user charges; greening commercial finance and introducing pollution charges/taxes.
