PEI shares experiences and lessons learned at Expert Group on Biodiversity for Poverty Eradication and Development meeting
PEI participated in the second meeting of the Expert Group on Biodiversity for Poverty Eradication and Development held from 4 to 6 December 2013 in Chennai, India. The linkages between biodiversity and poverty eradication are at the heart of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-20. The aim of the expert group was to provide guidance towards a conceptual framework as w ell as a road map for the integration of biodiversity into poverty eradication and development in the context of the Strategic Plan. PEI provided specific examples on capacity-building for Ministries of Finance, Planning, Environment and different sector Ministries as w ell as cross ministerial coordination and South-South cooperation from its program. Other lessons learned from PEI include the importance of economic assessments and evidence for advocacy and the need to link poverty-environment mainstreaming to the social, environmental and economic benefits of sustainable natural resources management, including access and benefit sharing schemes.
